DIY Wood Burned Sukkah Sign

DIY Wood Burned Sukkah Sign lulav and esrog

A piece of wood, a little patience, and a tefillah you look forward to saying and singing all Yom Tov. This wood-burned sign combines the organic beauty of raw timber with one of the most beautiful lines from Bentching on Sukkos:

הרחמן הוא יקים לנו את סוכת דוד הנופלת

Featuring a delicate, hand-drawn lulav and esrog, the project is incredibly simple to create but yields a beautifully understated result. If your style leans toward a neutral, organic, or macramé-inspired sukkah, this piece fits right in, becoming a meaningful keepsake you’ll love unpacking year after year.

Supplies

  • Unfinished wood plaque or board

  • Printed tracing template

  • Graphite transfer paper (or carbon paper)

  • Painter's tape

  • Wood burning tool with a fine-point tip

  • Fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit)

  • Soft cloth

  • Clear matte sealer (optional)

  • Cotton rope or jute twine for hanging

Step 1: Prepare the Wood

Lightly sand the surface of your wood plaque until it feels smooth, then wipe away any dust with a clean cloth.

Step 2: Transfer the Design

Place the graphite paper on the wood with the dark side facing down. Center the printed template on top and secure it with painter's tape so it doesn't move.

Carefully trace every line of the design, including the Hebrew text, lulav, esrog, and decorative accents. Remove the paper to reveal your outline.

Step 3: Burn the Design

Fit your wood burning tool with a fine-point tip and let it heat up. Slowly and steadily trace over your transferred lines. The trick here is patience; let the heat of the tool do the work rather than forcing it, which keeps your lines crisp and clean.

Step 4: Add Texture

Once the outline is complete, add light shading to bring the design to life.

  • Give the esrog subtle texture.

  • Add fine detail to the hadassim and aravos.

  • Slightly darken the binding around the lulav.

  • Leave plenty of natural wood exposed for a clean, modern finish.

Step 5: Seal the Wood

If desired, apply a matte clear sealer to protect your artwork while preserving the natural wood look.

Step 6: Style It in Your Sukkah

Hang your finished sign using cotton rope or jute twine.

It pairs beautifully with macramé wall hangings, eucalyptus garlands, woven lanterns, linen fabrics, warm string lights, and other natural textures for a relaxed, organic sukkah design.

Designer Tip

Don't overcomplicate the styling. The beauty of this project comes from its simplicity. Layer it with soft textures, warm lighting, and natural materials to create a sukkah that feels peaceful, inviting, and full of meaning.
